The Story
I consider myself a creative archivist. I enjoy keeping analog and digital memories of events that are meaningful and priceless. The fact that we can have a tangible record of an event that will never happen again makes me take great pride and care in my work.
I grew up on MTV and Nintendo, but spent a fair share of my time in the woods up in trees and by the river or lake with a fishing pole in hand and a wild imagination.
I owe a lot of my success to learning how to rollerblade. I thickened my skin getting rejected at the roller rink to couple skate, but those laps in the rink and on the streets paired with a MiniDV camcorder honed the sharpened blade that is now slicing and dicing films to this day. My friends and I would skate every day, but jumping over potholes and down stairs is cool and all, but what if no one sees it? We decided to film our tricks and put them to music. Proof that we were cool. Proof we could produce our own skate films. I still have the film we made over 25 years ago and it laid the groundwork for the drive to film and edit awesome events.
I went to a performing arts high school with a focus on theatre. High school was pretty awesome. I had a good bout of acne, but I had rollerblades and access to film equipment, stages and endless energy. The fashion styles of the 90s were interesting, but had a life without cell phones and social media and a thirst for salty, teenage adventures.
I attended the New World School of the Arts in Miami with a focus on Musical Theatre. Miami at the turn of the century was raw. The art deco apartments and some of our college haunts have turned into sky-scraping condos, but the memories of living and working in Miami for a few years will always stay with me. I love a good time.
The Best College Job:
I got an ask from a buddy who needed someone to play the piano for a Horse racing track show on the weekends. The original person couldn’t do it and he was in a pinch. I learned the chords to “Fugue for Tinhorns” from Guys and Dolls and somewhat impressed the CEO of the track to give me a chance. I did the piano for a few years and then worked my way up to doing the audio and video for the show and eventually doing a hosting and producing stint. The best part about the job was the weekend schedule and that we got to listen to all the bands coming through to play right in front of us. Spring in Miami, good music, and horse racing. I would have access to the audio and camera gear and learned by experience, filming bands like REO Speedwagon, STYX, and a few notable others. I love filming live music and I think that this was where it started.
